And For My Next Trick...

Today for my Thursday Thirteen Things*, I am going to attempt a new trick. This shall be an interactive entry! I am going to ask thirteen questions. It is your job to pick THREE questions and ANSWER them in the comments. I realize this may not go well, but darn it, I am going to try! If it does not go well, we will just pretend this didn't happen. OK? OK.

* At about 5 today, I thought, "Oh no! It is Wednesday! I thought it was Tuesday! I forgot to post my Wednesday Thirteen!" What is wrong with me? Don't answer that. It is not one of the the thirteen questions. The thirteen questions are below.

1. What is the best present you have ever given someone?

2. What is the best present you have ever received?

3. If you could meet one blogger, who would it be?

4. If you could have one dessert right now, what would it be?

5. What should I serve as a side dish at my BBQ on Saturday?

6. Have you ever e-mailed a blogger you didn't know in real life?

7. Who do you want to win Project Runway?

8. What is your favorite book?

9. What is your favorite movie?

10. Are you in love with Jim from The Office? (Correct answer for both males and females: Yes.)

11. What is the worst present you have ever received?

12. If you could go on an all-expenses-paid, one-week vacation, where would you go?

13. a)Did you know that in Minnesota, some people play "Duck duck grey duck" instead of "Duck duck goose"?
b) Seriously, isn't that really weird? (Correct answer: Yes.)

3. At this moment, I would pick Preppygirl. It changes all the time though, and I would love to meet all of you!

10. HELL YES, I LOVE YOU, JIM. Even though you are not a real person.

12. I would either go to Australia or take a swanky Mediterranian (sp?) cruise.

I suppose I should answer all of these. Maybe tomorrow!

5. Deviled Eggs. I know they gross some people out, but I HEART THEM. Of course, I won't be at your BBQ, so nevermind. Maybe guacamole.

6. Yes, since I hardly know any bloggers, and the ones I do know are pretty half-assed about it (except Hamster Grrl), I have to kind of put myself out there and try to make friends. Especially since I long to go to the next BlogHer. I emailed Kristy (She Walks) to talk about how much I hated one of her commenters, and Whinger to comment privately on something.

8. Tie between Watership Down and Lords of Discipline.

Carmen said...

Good idea :)

5. You should definitely serve baked beans at a BBQ
7. I don't have a favorite yet in Project Runway. Michael probably
9. Favorite Movie is the Princess Bride!

I think posts that clearly solicit comments are the best. I think I will try that soon, since I seem to get fewer comments with each post I place (apparently I am actually getting less interesting...or more offensive, who knows). Anywho, here go my answers:

5. I've got to go with the commenter who said deviled eggs, because I just commented to hubby this week that it's been a long time since I had deviled eggs, and they sound good.

6. I have never emailed a blogger. My contact has been kept to posts and comments

9. My favorite movie is Say Anything. One of my all-time favorite movie quotes is "I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen."

Chaotic Mom said...

5. Hashbrown casserole. Scoops out easily and sides with everything.

6. All the time. Have "met" some cool bloggers.

7. I can't pull up the site right now to get his name, but I LOVE what that guy with the tatoos (on his neck...) comes up with. Not only can he think outside of the box, but he can really put things together.

Anonymous said...

5. I definitely have to jump on the deviled eggs bandwagon! Yummy. One caveat: they kind of make your fridge stink, so be sure you have one of those tupperware deviled egg holders so you can seal them up nice and tight.

7. I think Michael should win. Laura and Uli are both very good, but kind of one-trick ponies. Last week, Uli made the EXACT SAME dress she'd made a few weeks before. Which is also the exact same dress she wears all the time. It's a nice dress, but enough already. And Laura? We get it. You are very skinny and your sternum is very bony. Now cover it up.

8. My favorite book is the unoriginal choice "Catcher in the Rye." I can't help it. Every time I read it, it gets me. The writing is so spare and so brilliant. More recent favorites include Delillo's "White Noise" and Curtis Sittenfeld's "Prep."

2. What is the best present you have ever received? My engagement ring. I love it and I was surprised by it, which made it even better.

7. Who do you want to win Project Runway? Michael!

5. What should I serve as a side dish at my BBQ on Saturday? 7-layer dip. Yum!

2. Diamond earings, studs, that hubby picked all by himself, and I love them! He had wrapped them in the box of a mountain bike fork, so when I unwrapped it I was a little surprised at the gift, since he was mostly doing the mountaing biking! He got me good that year!

6. I've e-mailed a few... and I still don't know them in real life!

9. My favorite movie is... wow! Too many for me to narrow it down, but Grease is up there, with Pretty Woman and The Abyss

PreppyGirl said...

Let's see...

3. I'll have to admit that I'd like to meet you too. I could totally see us doing a couples date and probably laughing our asses off all night.

7. Project Runway? - well, now that you have me hooked on it, I'm hoping Michael wins. I like Laura's tailoring but I think she's kinda a bitch. Jeffrey has his moments but he's clearly got issues. I think Michael's got the most talent mixed with the kindest personality.

10. In love with Jim? YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!

Anonymous said...

I noticed that I picked the two that had to do with food. This may be because I am on a diet and am using my imaginiation for food porn. I digress.

4. Creme Brulee with raspberry sauce, peach pie with vanilla ice cream or tiramisu and a cappucino. I know you said one, but I am hungry goddammit!

5. Taco Salad. Everyone loves taco salad and it's very easy to make and it will be the only dish that's empty by the end of the day. Also, deviled eggs are named "deviled" for a reason. That reason is that they suck.

10. YES. You should also watch the British version of "The Office" because Tim (the Jim character) is even MORE lovable with a British accent.

schneids said...

10. Um....well, i like Jim.

12. New Zealand. I would love to go there.

13. I noticed that too when i moved here. Duck..duck..grey duck? That is so weird. It is a goose, not a grey duck. I will raise my kids to say "goose"!!!!

Galoot said...

You rock -r-!

5. P-Girl's aunt has passed down a really cool black bean dip recipe that we could shoot your way. It is served cold and contains: black beans, white corn, cherry tomatoes, red and green onions, lime juice, cilantro, evoo and lots of cumin. Best served with Frito Scoops.

10. I love Jim for being as sensitive as I hope to be some day and for having the guts to go for the girl.

12. Key West + Galoot and PGirl = Happy Couple!

Anonymous said...

Oh I'll play! And because I'm a nerd, I'll do an extra question.

4. Banana cream pie, which is weird as I don't usually like it, but it's what popped into my head just now.

5. Frog-eye salad. Mmmmmm.

6. Of course.

7. Laura - almost died last night when she was almost out.

Knitting Maniac said...

Ok:

3. I would love to meet Lucinda/Lindsey from Suburban Turmoil. She is a hoot online, and would love to meet her IRL.

5. Corn casserole. One can corn (drained) and one can creamed corn, 8 oz sour cream, 1 stick butter, semi-melted, 1 box Jiffy (or other brand) corn muffin mix, one egg. Mix all together in one bowl, plop in casserole dish and bake on 350 for an hour. Great stuff.

7. I would like to see Laura win. I think she is really cool!

Stefanie said...

Oh my. Such great questions, I want to answer ALL of them! That would make me a total comment whore, though, so instead I will do the opposite and give a NON-answer to the only question I have no answer for: #7. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on earth who is not watching Project Runway.

Oh, and the duck, duck, gray duck thing? I thought it was dumb and bizarre too when I moved here, until I found out it's actually a lot more creative their way. The kids don't just say "duck, duck, duck, duck, etc." Instead, they have to describe each duck--e.g., "Red duck, purple duck, yellow and pink spotted duck, Burberry plaid duck*, chartreuse duck, GRAY DUCK!" See? It's actually sort of fun that way, though the Wisconsin-born traditionalist in me still thinks it's a little messed up.

* That's for those snooty rich kids with fancy-pants mothers.

5. Turkey Cashew Pasta Salad. (grill or bake turkey breast and cube, cook pasta with shape like bowtie or spiral, chop celery and/or green pepper, mix everything in bowl with mayo or miracle whip and add cashews)It's addicting.

7. Jeffrey. I know he's a dick but I like his clothes. Funky and urban.

11. My mother in law got me all of Dr. Laura's books the first year her son and I were dating. You know the ones: Stupid Things Women/Men Do To Mess up Their Lives, etc.

(good choice btw to want to meet Preppygirl, she's swell)

I love this kind of stuff.

3. Waiter, from Waiter Rant, even if it ruins the mystique for me. I’ve had a crush on him for about a year and a half and I'm dying of curiosity.

6. Several times. I’ve never met someone I met through a blog, and nobody I know has admitted to having a blog.

12. Paris

Unknown said...

I shall answer:

3. Canadian bacon. He's been my crush since ever.

6. Not only have I e-mailed, but have talked to over the phone and even visited a few last year.

7. Michael. He stole my heart since the first time I saw him, and how can you not love the man after last night's comment?

-R- said...

JayAre- deviled eggs and guacamole are both good ideas.

Libragirl- Hey, thanks. And I love Michael too.

Carmen- I haven't watched The Princess Bride in a long time. I will have to watch it again soon.

3carnations- I love love love that quote from "Say Anything."

Chaotic Mom- You love Jeffrey? Noooo!

Lawyerish- Your comments on Project Runway made me laugh. Why does Laura insist on showing off the bony sternum everyday?!

Janet- An engagement ring is definitely a good present. Good choice.

Spaw- that's clever that he hid the earrings in a mountain biking box.

Prep- we should go on a couples date! It will be you, me, Galoot, H, and Jim!

Boozie- reading your dessert choices made me so hungry. And I have see British Tim and like him too. Except I have never seen the finale because I can't freaking find it anywhere!

-R- said...

Schneids- "Like" is not acceptable. You must LOVE. I forgive you though.

Galoot- send me that recipe! It sounds great.

Beth- that is interesting that you thought of a dessert you don't normally like. I don't like bananas, but I do like banana cream pie. Weird.

Maniac- good answers. I like Michael the best, but Laura is growing on me (despite the bony sternum).

Stefanie- I love comment whores. Do not be afraid to write a whole story in my comment section. And I didn't know that about Duck Duck Grey Duck. That does make it better. But if I heard a kid say burberry plaid duck, I would freak out a little.

Slea- whoa that side dish sounds too advanced for me!

Cipher- Paris is definitely a good choice. I have been and loved it. But I liked London better, I think.

LC- who is Canadian bacon?

1. So, the best present I ever gave (well I think it was the best because it was totally creative and thoughtful) was to my boyfriend this past Valentine's Day. I bought one of those heart paper punches and a box of Sweetheart's. I punched out a bunch of pastel colored hearts (the same colors as Sweetheart's are) and wrote "I Love" on one side of all them and then on the other side I wrote something that I love about him, or something he does, or something about our relationship. I threw all the Sweetheart's away, because I think they are disgusting :), and filled the box with the little hearts that I made. He really liked it.

6. Yes I have...Janet (loveisblonde) actually, because she's really cool and I wanted to let her know! :)

10. YES!!! I LOVE HIM!

3. The Random Yak
5. The slightly sweet cole slaw with small black peppercorns made from a secret recipe at the barbecue place that used to be just off the circle in downtown Sebring, Florida. That guy should have been the Cole Slaw King of the World. Don't bother, it's not there any more. Never mind.
6. I didn't know that bloggers had real lives.
7 and 10. No
9. "A Man for All Seasons" (1960 version) (Oscar for Best Picture)

Galoot said...

2 cans of black beans (drain a bit)
1 can of white kernel corn (drained)
Bunch of green onions (chop up the white parts, discard the green)
1 small or medium red onion (chopped)
1 container of cherry tomatoes (halved or quartered)
6 tablespoons of olive oil
6 tablespoons of lime juice (fresh or bottled)

Mix it all together in a large bowl.

Season with a bit of cilantro and a lot of cumin.

Serve as a cold side salad or a dip for chips (Fritos are the best, but tortilla chips work well too.)

Enjoy!

4. Cheesecake, please.

9. Shaun of the Dead

10. Hell yes. And also Tim from the original British version of the Office.

PreppyGirl said...

Just a side note on the bean dip. It doesn't have to be white shoe peg corn - regular corn is what we normally use (I'm not sure what you mean by "white" corn Galoot?). But you should definitely drain both the corn and the black beans.

Also - Galoot is an onion freak. The original recipe was actually something like a 1/4 cup of chopped red onions. I usually just take a red onion and chop about a third or half of it up (depending on size). And like he says just a bit of cilantro (either freshly chopped or from the jar is fine) - it is pretty strong so keep tasting. And you'll need a lot of Cumin. Just keep seasoning to taste.

It's pretty chunky, so it doesn't stick to chips well (which is why we recommend the scoops chips). But it is oh so yummy. I hope it works for ya!

OH, and LOL on the couples date. Love it.

Galoot said...

Jim can come along if he brings Pam...growl!

Anonymous said...

Boozie, I agree. Tim is lovely. He breaks my heart.

#4
Italian Gelato--banana and hazelnut flavours. Mmmmmm.
#5
If you choose this, you will not be sorry. I don't even like black olives and this always goes over a treat every time I take it anywhere.
Black Olive Dip
2 small cans of chopped black olives
2 small cans of diced green chilis
Bunch of green onions chopped
About 3 tomatoes, chopped
Salt, pepper, dash of olive oil and lemon juice. Dash of red wine vinegar. Let sit for an hour. Serve with chips.
EVEN KIDS LOVE THIS!
#10 Of course! And I may or may not have a thing for Dwight too.

5. Potato salad

6. Yes, I sometimes respond to comments.

12. Anywhere...key words=Expense paid vacation. Seriously, I wouldn't even turn down a Holiday Inn 30 miles away! :)

-R- said...

Marmite, Dwight cracks me up. My favorite was the episode where he acted normal due to a concussion.

Shpprgrl, I don't think I could turn down a free vacation anywhere either.

-R- said...

So I just realized I didn't reply to all comments because I am dumb. Just know that I read all the comments and loved them- unless you said you did not love Jim.

Guinness_Girl said...

Damn, I can't pick just one question! Lucky for me, you told Stefanie comment whores are welcome. Therefore...
1. When I was 8 and had very little Christmas gift money to spend, I got my dad orange golf balls (my favorite color at the time) and wrote on them with a sharpie pen - "I [heart] Daddy" and stuff like that. He still has them.

2. My engagement ring. I love it.

3. Seriously, I could never pick just one.

4. Well, I just had peach pie with a side of ice cream - so Boozie will be totally jealous.

5. I'm too late! Corn on the cob is always fantastic. And tomato-mozzarella salad.

6. All the time!

7. Stefanie is not the only one not watching Project Runway.

8. Impossible to answer!

9. Ditto.

10. OF COURSE.

11. A very heavy paperweight. From my parents at Christmas in London. It was lovely to haul that heavy piece of crap home.

12. Santorini, Greece!

13. No, how weird!
