Life Lessons

When I didn't write anything yesterday, were you thinking I had traveled to Texas to go on a church trip with my new friends? Well, much to dismay, they have not yet invited me on their trip, so I guess I will stay in Minnesota for now.

A post Jonniker wrote the other day, plus some of your comments on my last post, made me think of some weird phone calls I have received.

When I moved to Minnesota, I got a new cell phone and a new phone number. One Sunday, I got a phone call from a woman I didn't know. "YOU STOLE MY HUSBAND'S PHONE!" she yelled. I asked her what phone number she was trying to reach. She said her husband's phone number was XXX-XXX-XXXXZ. I tried to explain to her that phone numbers only have 10 digits and that the number she had just said was not a real phone number. She screamed, "I KNOW MY HUSBAND'S PHONE NUMBER! IT IS XXX-XXX-XXXXZ, AND YOU HAVE HIS PHONE!" Then she threatened to beat me up. I don't know about you, but I do not care for psycho idiots yelling at me. H took the phone from me and started screaming back at this lady. H hung up. The lady called back at least 10 times. So I called the police. An officer came to our house to take the report. Meanwhile, psycho idiot lady who doesn't know how phone numbers work kept calling me. The officer called psycho idiot lady from his Official Police Phone and tried to explain to her how phone numbers work. Eventually, he just said, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but this woman does not have your phone, and if you keep calling her, I will arrest you for harassing her." And she never called again. Yay!

The lessons of the day are (1) people are stupid, and (2) I am not afraid to call the police. But you already knew that.

Seriously? You were able to involve POLICE in the harassment?

That's awesome.

That's too funny, now looking back on it, of course. The best part is that she just wouldn't grasp the concept of 10 digits--you'd think that'd be a pretty strong argument. For a rational person. Ah, there's the rub. Glad she stopped calling!

Funny! I wonder how long it was before she realized what an ass she made of herself, or if she realized at all.

Yeah, I kind of over-reacted. It was awesome.

But seriously, why did you have my husband's phone?

I once had a girl call my house repeatedly one evening insisting that mine was the number her boyfriend had given her for the hospital he had just been admitted to. "I'm sorry, this isn't the hospital. This is a private home." "But this is the number he gave me." "I'm sorry..." It went on and on, with her getting increasing irate with each phone call. "I know he's there--why won't you let me talk to him?!" I finally screamed in her ear and slammed the phone down. No wonder her boyfriend pretended to check himself into the hospital and gave her a fake phone number--he probably just wanted to get away.

Since we moved (almost a year ago) a woman named Juanna Lopez (behold, caller ID) calls our house at least once a week. We're not usually home when she calls so we just laugh over the weird messages, but it's really strange that she keeps calling! We have told her several times that she is calling the wrong number but she just keeps leaving messages.

I sort of wish that you had fought her, though.

In Florida, our phone number used ended in 2800, so it was close to those of several businesses. We used to get some funny voice mails. One was from a woman calling her doctor because of a burning sensation in her vagina (which came out of her mouth sounding like "vaginer"). Another woman called thinking we were a clothing store. She inquired about sales of belts and slacks.

I had teenagers calling our house at 3 a.m. because they had one digit wrong on someone's phone.
Went on for weeks.
I was ticked.

Finally I figured out the number they really wanted... called and mentioned that it could be considered harassment if it didn't stop.

The dad said he would take care of it.. and he did!!

Wow! I was thinking how in the heat of the moment I never would've realized she was saying 10 digits. I just would've heard a bunch of numbers and yelling. I'd like to think I'd have called the boys in blue on her, though. :)
