Tidbits

I was worried about my last post because it is kind of embarrassing. I am glad all of you enjoyed it! I feel better knowing that we are not the only freaks out there. (I kid because I love.)

H and I shall be traveling to Washington, D.C. in the near future. We are going for our friends' wedding, and then we are staying in downtown Arlington for 3 full days and 2 half-days. (It makes sense; trust me.) We were just in D.C. in January, but that was only a weekend trip. This time we want to go to a Washington Nationals (baseball) game, see the WWII Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial, and see the Jefferson and Lincoln Monuments. We also want to have a nice (but not too expensive) dinner on my birthday while we are there. (Notice how I just casually remind you that my birthday is coming up? I am smooth like that.)

Any advice on things we should or should not miss or restaurants we should test out?

I am getting a haircut tomorrow, and I think I am going to have my hair stylist person chop a lot off! I am excited. I don't really have a hairstyle right now. My hair just kind of hangs there. We shall see what happens.

Edited 6/24 to add: the haircut turned out very cute!

Oooohh birthday coming? Me too. Go for it on the haircut. If you don't like it, it'll always grow back. Gets pretty hot in old Minneapolis

I've only been to DC briefly, but: Smithsonian. (That should take up 3 and 2/2 days :> )

Also, kleenex highly advised for visit to Vietnam Memorial. It's just... stunning, and pictures don't do it justice.

It was fun to go to the top of the Washington monument, pull out a penny, turn it to tails and face west :-D

Happy Birthday!

Ditto on the tissues for the Vietnam Memorial.

You've got to see the Lincoln Memorial too. He is just. so. big.

And then turn around and imagine that you are MLK looking at a sea of people and telling them how it should be.

liz, you're right. The Lincoln Memorial was the first memorial we visited, and yes - he's so big, and so perfect. I think we used some Kleenex there too :> The Jefferson Memorial was too far away for us (DD and I only had a few hours to spend), and I've always regretted missing it.

The Jeff is only so-so. Not nearly as awe-inspiring as the Lincoln or Vietnam memorials. It's really only worth going to see the Jeff when the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom.

Good info - but did you have to remind me? :> It was cherry blossom time when we were there!

Email me. I live 3 miles from DC and Nick and I eat out about 2-3 times a week. As far as monuments and crap, since I live here, I don't really do that kind of thing. But the International Spy Museum is so freaking cool, I could go there and The American Histoy Museum (part of the Smithsonian) again and again.

I agree about the Smithsonian. Every time I go, I make sure to visit a part I've never seen. It's just amazing.

Are you going to post pics of your haircut? :-)

Hope you ahvea great time!

When IS your birthday? Mine's coming, too - but not for a month or two.

I am with everyone on the kleenex for Vietnam Memorial, as well as on the Smithsonian. When I was there on a high school trip (many moons ago), we went to this very cool statue? monument? whatever? that I think was called The Awakening...but I might be confusing it with the Kate Chopin novella. Hmm. Might need to do some research here.

go to the air and space museum and the American history museum. Both very cool. and the steps of the supreme court..of course.

Guinness_Girl, "The Awakening" is a very cool statue at Hains Point (Alexandria, I think). But there was some discussion about removing it a while back -- I hope they didn't, but they may have.

R, for places to eat downtown (upscale but not supremely so), I recommend Zaytinya (delicious and creative mezze) and Ceiba (modern Latin American - one of my favorite places). Zaytinya is near the Spy Museum.
